This eco4life article features a picture of the “Kaleidoscape” a hand-dyed and hand-crochet 770 pounds of netting, created in vibrant shades of orange, hot pink, blue, green and yellow.

Kaleideum Downtown (formerly The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem) was conceived by the Junior League of Winston-Salem as its 75th anniversary gift to the community. The Museum opened its doors on November 20, 2004.

Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks) was also founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors as the Nature Science Center in 1964. The two museums began talks of a possible collaboration in early 2015, with a mission of “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.” On July 1, 2016, The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks merged and announced the new name — Kaleideum — a few months later.

Kaleideum is committed to developing exhibits and programming that fuse STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), literacy, and arts education into an integrated approach to learning. We want to help prepare early learners for school and spark all children’s imaginations and their desire to learn more.

Kaleideum Downtown features “The Kaleidoscape” a climbing art installation on the museum’s outdoor patio.  The Kaleidoscope was created by an acclaimed Japanese textile artist, Toshiko Horiuchi-MacAdam, who hand-dyed and hand-crocheted the 770 pounds of netting in the structure over the course of nine months.

The Kaleidoscape, created in vibrant shades of orange, hot pink, blue, green and yellow, “truly combines the idea of art and play,” said Elizabeth Dampier, the museum’s executive director.

“Horiuchi-MacAdam has created similar structures in Japan, China and Spain, but this is the first one in the United States”, Dampier said.
